In India, we celebrate Teacher's Day on 5th September in honor of the Great President late. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Garu. He was a great Indian Philosopher and Statesman who served as the First Vice President of India between 1952 - 62 and the second President of India from 1962-67.

Know more about Teachers Day (Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan):

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in a Telugu-speaking Brahmin family, in Thiruttani in Tamilnadu on 5th September 1888. His forefathers were from a village called Sarvepalli, a village 20 kilometers from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. His Parents are Sarvepalli Veeraswami(father) & Sarvepalli Sita(mother). People used to call her Sitamma. He spent most of the time in his early life in Thiruttani and Tirupathi. He studied primary education at K.V High School at Thiruttani. Later, Radhakrishnan was joined in Hermansburg Evangelical Lutheran Mission School in Tirupathi & Government High School in Walajapet.

Radhakrishnan received many scholarships and appreciations in his life. He chooses philosophy by chance and left his mark on it. It all started when a cousin who finished the course at the same college gave his Philosophy textbooks to Radhakrishnan and eventually, it became his academic course. He wrote a thesis on "The Ethics of the Vedanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions" for the M.A Degree. He was afraid that Dr. Alfred Grorge Hogg would offend his thesis. Instead, he received appreciation from Dr.Hogg on having done excellent work. His first thesis was published in 1908. He interpreted the Criticism of Hogg and other Christian teachers of Indian Community as "disturbed my faith and shook the traditional props on which I learned." He himself describes

"The challenge of Christian critics impelled me to make a study of Hinduism and find out what is living and what is dead in it. My pride as a Hindu, roused by the enterprise and eloquence of Swami Vivekananda, was deeply hurt by the treatment accorded to Hinduism in missionary institutions."

His lifetime studies include "The study on Indian Philosophy & Religion" and a lifelong defense of Hinduism against "Uninformed Western Culture"

In 1909, Radhakrishnan was selected in Dept. of Philosophy at the Madras Presidency College, and later in 1918, he became Professor in Philosophy by the University of Mysore and started teaching at Maharaja's College in Mysore. In 1921, University of Calcutta has appointed him as a Professor in Philosophy. There, he represented the University of Calcutta at "Congress of the Universities of the British Empire" in 1926 and the "International Congress of Philosophy" at Harvard University in 1926. He was the Vice-chancellor of Andhra University from 1931-36. In 1936 and 1937, he was nominated for the Noble Prize in Literature.

He is well known as one of India's most distinguished scholars in Philosophy. His philosophy always anchored in Advaita Vedantam, demystifying the tradition for a contemporary understanding.

Why did Teachers Day start in 1952 ?

"When Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the first Vice President of India in 1952, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, on 5th September. He replied,

Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers' Day.

His birthday has since been celebrated as Teachers' Day in India".

How we Celebrated Teachers day in the 90's?

It was always great to cherish our memories. Before the existence of the Digital World, the celebrations are quite different and beautiful. Students always take time to wish the Teachers directly. We have a beautiful example for you to take you to your 90's.

I guess it was in 1999, and we had a teacher called Mr. Prasad, who thought me Mathematics in our early academic days. We really liked his way of explaining the procedures in every problem and his approach was astonished by every teacher in the town. There come a most awaited Teachers day for all of us to show love and it was not a routine day as we thought. Yes, it was Sunday. So as usual, the school was closed.

My village was 15 kilometers far from Prasad sir's home. We are all 3 friends gathered at one place and started cycling to his home with 2 bicycles to wish him on the special occasion. We started our cycling at 9 am and reached his home at around 10:40 am. We wished him, had some beautiful time with his family. After a delicious lunch with pongal and pappu kura, we returned back to our village on bicycles. Prasad sir was overwhelmed with the wishes and we pumped up with the love and affection his family shared.

But the hard part was on the next day.!! We were not at all able to move our legs as we bicycled for 30 kilometers continuously to wish our beloved teacher. So as expected, we did not attend school for 2 days and missed all the classes.

That was the kind of affection and love we had on our teachers.

How are we celebrating Teachers day now?

Now the Internet is everywhere. People got busy with their lives and wishing through greetings, cards, and templates. We are not finding time to wish our beloved teachers. On this teachers day, let's cherish all the memories you had in school and college with your beloved teachers.
